Urban development plan

The site of the old, dilapidated auction harbour next to the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht was transformed over a period of 10 years into a popular urban district. Where once the fruit and vegetable boots arrived and departed, there are now 550 spacious apartments and more than 100 single-family dwellings. A total of 950 apartments and homes will be built by 2015. Bouwfonds is working on this inner city redevelopment in close cooperation with the municipality of Utrecht. The urban development plan and architecture fit in nicely with the history and surrounding buildings. In this way, the building - the former head office of the Utrecht fruit and vegetable auction - now serves as a day nursery and sports hall. The historic harbour has been resurrected in a modern variant, with houseboats. Old gravel hoppers have been converted into commercial space and much investment has gone into green squares. All these elements give the district a new identity, ensuring liveliness and cosiness. The occupants of Parkhaven, which is close to the centre of a bustling city, have the additional benefits of water and considerable green space in their surroundings. This makes Parkhaven a successful example of new-style city living.
