Urban development plan

A new multifunctional area is being developed in the eastern part of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, where the ferry, Kruiningen-Perkpolder, docked until 2004: Perkpolder. This is taking place with the cooperation of the State, the province, the municipality, the water board, the Forestry Commission and several private parties, including Bouwfonds. The Perkpolder plan combines residential living, recreation and nature. Two hundred and fifty permanent homes, a luxury hotel-restaurant with a wellness centre and a marina will be built at the former Veerplein on a 10-metre high terp. In the western section of Perkpolder, there will be 200 second homes and a golf course. All the buildings will be situated safely behind the sea dike.
The landscape will form the basis for housing the various functions as natural elements. A significant aspect is the extensive scenic area outside the dikes that can withstand future rises in the sea level as a result of climate change. The scenic development outside the dikes is demonstration project of ComCoast, a European project under leadership of the Department of Public Works, which develops innovative solutions to protect coastal areas from flooding. The rearrangement of the area should provide a new impulse for economic and sustainable landscape development of Oost-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
