Location
Description
On the Van Diemenstraat in the lively urban section of Westerpark, Bouwfonds realised the IJside residential and commercial building. The project consists of 47 apartments, 20 commercial offices and a double level parking garage. This new building forms a link between the historic warehouses on the Van Diemenstraat and the renovated grain silos on the Silodam. With its sturdy appearance, the building fits in nicely with the watery surroundings and bustling environment of the old Houthaven on the IJ river. To emphasis the relation with the harbour, steel-coloured, concrete sandwich panels, which refer to the former harbour activities at this location, were used on the outside. The building's interior is upholstered with Jatoba wood, which gives it a softer, less industrial look. Part of the volume is tilted to retain the main sightlines between the Houthavens and the city. The result is a covered square that borders on the water, where the entrances to the homes are situated. The inner courtyard, with its open, transparent core, provides for light and sunshine on the covered section of the square and in the indoor garden. The height of the floors and width of the pattern sizes adds large diversity to flexible residential living and industrial space.
